The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks. When two or more computers are connected so that they can communicate, they become part of a network. The Internet consists of a world-wide interconnection of such networks, belonging to companies, governments and individuals, allowing all of the devices connected to these networks to communicate with each other.

The connections between the computers are a mixture of copper cables, fiber-optic cables, wireless radio connections and could be via satellite links.

How it works?

The Internet architecture has three basic layers –

  • Internet Backbone – are high speed networks connected to each other
  • Internet Service Providers(ISP) – are connected to any one of the backbones with high speed data transfer lines.
  • Internet user- Who wants to access the internet.

Internet Language/Protocol

In order to communicate, computers need to be able to understand each other. On the Internet, communication is possible because all devices use the same “language” or protocol, namely the Internet Protocol (IP), a “single market” with no physical, technical or national barriers.

How data is transferred from one computer to other ?

When you chat to somebody on the Net or send them an e-mail, Have you ever thought how many different computers you are using in the process? Let’s take a closer look!

  • In this respect, the Internet works a bit like the postal service. Letters are simply passed from one place to another, no matter who they are from or what messages they contain. The job of the mail service is to move letters from place to place.
  • When you send a letter, you don’t need to know about the vans, trains and planes that carry it to its destination, or how many post offices it passes through on the way. Nor do you need to know how your packets of internet data are transmitted through a variety of cables, routers and host computers on the way to their destination.
  • When you put an envelope in the post, it can contain many different types of data: a personal letter, an invoice, a photograph, and so on. The internet’s data packets also carry different types of data for different applications like test, software, audio or videos etc.
